With v1154, we have an option of doing up to 3 passes. What does this option do? Will it provide a better quality video movie?

from what i remember the first pass analyzes the movie to adjust the bitrate. dark parts of movie dont need as much data to show them, so cdvdm can reduce quality without you noticing. but if it suddenly shifts to a bright shot, cdvdm on one pass will not be able to compensate immediately and you will get a pixelated mess for a little bit. the multiple passes lets it know when to compensate for better quality without raising the resulting filesize.

In short:
"more passes = better quality for the same size file"

The point of diminishing returns is about 3, which is why it has been limited to that.
