I guess it depends on what you mean by 1:1. If you mean, capturing the video, audio and subtitles tracks without transcoding or altering them, you can certainly do this with MKV. It is what MakeMKV does, for example. If you mean create a copy with all the menus and supplementary materials...

Another log file, if this is helpful at all. US Blu-ray rental. It takes several minutes to scan the disk. Rip to Hard Drive aborts with read errors after a few minutes. I know this may be a bad disc, but I am just supplying another data point.

Both DVDs and Blu-ray discs are a collection of playlists or titles. It is possible to make a 1:1 rip of individual titles into MKV files. This is my preferred method as it throws away useless menus, movie trailers etc. If you use a program like BDInfo, it will tell you which playlist(s) to use.

Not what OP is asking for, but I'd welcome an API as well. I automate my media ripping and would love a way to do this programmatically. Just for comparison, Make MKV has a great automation-friendly interface.
