You want loose any quality demuxing out the VC-1 stream. You dont need Haali splitter for this. Doom9's website has some muxing tools properly suited for this. Converting VC-1 to mpeg4-asp like xvid or divx is just dumb. VC-1 and AVC are the best compression codecs currently available...

With BD+ no disc AFAIK has been mastered with it as of yet. It will be interesting to see what happens with BD+, BDROM mark and playback on standalones for ripped/burnt media.

Subjective comparisons are prone to false conclusions. Time and again, objective comparisons using PSNR and the like show AVC and VC-1 to be better than the older WMV3 era stuff.

HD-DVD and BRD titles use VC-1 and AVC. You wont do better than these codecs. Your options are to reduce the resolution and or the bitrate. Both of which will lead to not properly enjoying HD so why bother. You dont understand that WMV-HD was based off an older WM9 codec that isnt as good as...

Its equally possible on BluRay - you just need authoring software for bluray instead of HD-DVD. Bluray players are backwardly compatible. They typically have a legacy dvd optic system too.

There would be a benefit of DVDs though. They are mpeg2 encoded, and D1 resolution up to 720x576. And, never do they fill the dvd9 space with the menu. Menus, features etcetc reduce it. Using the better compression of VC1 or AVC you could author a HD-DVD disc with no menus, special features...
