A couple movies I have backed up for use in the car - when they get near the end - (maybe after about 80% of movie) they start sticking and flat freezing on me.

Am I burning at too high of speed or something?

quality issues

I am confused and I am looking for some answers. I am currently using memorex -R disks. When I attempt to play them in my Toshiba SD-3990 player, I get about 80% through the movie and it starts fouling up. ie pixilating, sticking, audio troubles etc. prior to that no problem at all. However, what I have realized is that if I put the same disk in my junky cyberhome walmart special... it will play just fine. Also if I put the disk back into the computer, it plays without a hitch. It seems to me that what the problem is that some dvd player have a way of buffering better or allow more tolerance with the media than others. Can anyone explain this to me. Should I junk my Toshiba? I just bought it last year. I read else where that I should try reducing the burn rate. I also read the +R format appears to work better with home players and the -R s are better for portables. I don't want Portables. I want to watch my backups on a Home player so my kids don't ruin the originals.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
 
the verbatims as mentioned seem to be your best option as the seem a lot more compatible with more dvd players than other discs.
as i've mentioned before,my daewoo player hates taiyo yuden discs (many people swear by this brand) but my ps2 loves them.
verbatim play equally well on both players.
i bought an unbranded 50xDVD cake a while ago.these are hit and miss for playback-if they stick or pixellate in one player i pop them into the other and they play flawlessly.
 
The first thing I would "Junk" would be the Memorex media.

I appreciate the advice. I only have a couple memorex left anyway. However, i do have a large pack of maxell and the first 5 or so gave me the same problem. I want to toss them all in the trash and go look for some verbatim. I am pretty sure I have used them in the past, before I had trouble. lol. My burners max burn rate is 16x. I think I will try reducing it instead of letting it determine the rate.

1. Update your burner's firmware (if available)

2. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Are you using inferior blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer is yes.
If you use poor quality blank media, then you should expect problems.

3. Try lowering your burn speed (not below 4x; if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x instead of 16x; an 8x burn speed on 16x rated media wouldn't be a bad idea either)

4. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom"

5. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems)

6. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in Clonedvd (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.

7. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Insert the problematic backup disc, select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your backup is bad (which is the most likely case), your optical drive may be slowly dying, or your optical drive simply doesn't like the disc (or your choice of blank media)--even if the disc looks fine.


Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 6)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")


Also, check the preview screen in Clonedvd to ensure you're backing up the proper title.
