With the format now dead and the manufacture of drives shut down, will support for HD-DVD be dropped from AnyDVD HD?

Thanks. Good bit of relief.

Got the addon for the 360 and I'm hoping to use it on my Vista PC.

The should not

With the format now dead and the manufacture of drives shut down, will support for HD-DVD be dropped from AnyDVD HD?

There will be HD movie releases for perhapes several more years becasue of contracts. Companies under contract my also release both HD and Blu-Ray. Several million people have HD and would like to see support continued.

Well, HD-DVD is a finalized spec so if it truly is dead then nothing will change. There is no region coding and AACS is optional but AACS has to be dealt with when handling BD, anyway. So, I don't see why support for HD-DVD would be dropped. For the time being HD-DVDs are still being produced and likely will into 2009.

I'm afraid this is highly unlikely (i.e. the 2009 part) now that Paramount/Dreamworks had cancelled their HD DVD releases after March 4. This leaves Universal still not yet officially announce when they will stop releasing HD DVD.

I don't agree with your statements from what I've read. Dreamworks will be releasing HD-DVD for the time being and they did have an agreement going into 2009. HD-DVD is a finalized spec. There is little if any extra effort that Slysoft would have to put into continuing support. So, again I say, I don't see Slysoft dropping support for HD-DVD.

I've read similar stories from the link given above before posting the above. Supposedly Paramount would make some announcement on March 4, so we may be more clear by then. Of course that is irrelevant whether or not Slysoft have to drop support for HD DVD and I don't think they will.

Hardware to the rescue

Sleep easy, don't think you've been a victim of the olde BETA/VHS thing that happened in the tape business.

Save your pennies and quiet money for the next revolution on the hardware front.

Reliable info is saying at least one prominent hardware manufacturer will come out with a combo drive that will read both HD and BD discs.

Good, huh?

And no, we won't leave HD fair-use customers in the lurch. 8)

I thought they were HD DVD exclusive now.

No. Quite some time ago the BD camp realized that as much as they wanted to not allow porn on BD that they had to and changed their stance.

I'm sure some of the companies may be exclusively BD but the biggest stories talked about them releasing on HD-DVD & BD.

For the porn industry I see supporting both formats to be in their favor until there is reason not to, IMHO.

Take this as RUMOR ONLY until it gets confirmed, but, Cyberlink has pulled HD DVD support from their authoring software and someone in their forum suggests they'll be doing so for PowerDVD 8, as well. Again, pound of salt here as nothing is even remotely confirmed, but, it wouldn't honestly surprise me if they took it out. Less to support even though there's no changes that will ever have to be made to that code line. If the idiots were smart they'd use a plugin style framework for this kind of stuff so that you have a stable code base for all the gui related crap and drop in modules for DVD, BD, HD DVD, etc support. Remember how long it took them to reconcile the two "versions" of PowerDVD Ultra to get them BOTH to play BD *AND* HD DVD in the first place? Utterly ridiculous.

I doubt that, 'cause this would be very stupid, as all customers already owning HD DVDs (I believe this still is the majority, thanks to the XBOX360 drive) won't be upgrading = less money for Cyberlink.

Dropping HD DVD support from authoring software OTOH is quite understandable.

I agree this would be incredibly stupid on their part. Again, I stress that it's nothing more than speculation. We will see what their plans are. Hopefully they simply leave the support in there and focus their new efforts on improving their incredibly pathetic BD support. :)

I would suppose support for HD DVD would gradually fade, as their will be less demand due to lack of new titles.

James will be forced to put more of his is attention to Blu Ray more (as I predicted, and he would probably have preferred otherwise).

Dropping support for HD DVD is another matter, I do not think AnyDVD will drop HD DVD support completely - since their is a customer base who owns both drives and discs, but I do not think there will be much of a requirement to add support for new discs as there won't be many more new titles released on HD DVD. Other software and hardware that is still in early stages of development will shift focus to Blu Ray or drop HD DVD support all together.

Dreamworks will eventually find a way out of their obligation too.. Before you know it, they'll be releasing their titles on blu ray aswell. They just bet on the wrong horse. These things happen.

HD DVD owes its demise to:
- incredibly lousy marketing (over here at least, it was just terrible - but this is nothing new for toshiba...)

- the fact that blu ray writers have been readily available on the retail market for quite some time now (50GB rewritable discs is still a problem though, apparantly)

- playstation 3

- number and selection of available titles + a few major studios with many more good titles backing blu ray (with Warner dealing the KO)

- lower (AVAILABLE) capacity per disc compared to blu ray

There were a few positive sides to HD DVD, like: faster loading times - better fixed standard, less DRM/protection posibilities. But they weren't sufficient to make a difference in the format war.

From Cyberlink's newsletter I got couple of days ago (text in bold was like that in the newsletter):

Wal-Mart. Best Buy. NetFlix. Warner Brothers movie studio. The latest round of worldwide retailers' and major Hollywood movie studio's decision to withdraw support for the HD DVD format spelled the end for Toshiba's next-gen format, making the high-definition Blu-ray format as the clear winner.

As CyberLink product owners, you probably had no qualms because of our dual HD formats playback, editing and backup support. Keep in mind that CyberLink will continue with HD DVD support for all CyberLink software, but the adoption of Blu-ray will sure to be even faster!

I missed that newsletter. However, that's not an accurate statement in bold as like I said, they've already decided to pull HD DVD authoring support. Not that I'm complaining or making an issue of it as really, who the hell needs HD DVD authoring when there's no drives out there to burn it with?! :D As long as they keep playback I'm happy. This PowerDVD 8 version coming out "soon" is supposed to be some awesome thing. We'll see. Unfortunately I'll probably end up upgrading to it against my better judgement. I just hope all the current issues are fixed.
