Hi...I just burn't a dual layer disc using AnyDVD and Clone DVD2.
It plays fine on my computer but it has problems reading the disc
on my regular Panasonic dvd player which is about 5 years old.
My single layer dvds play fine on my Panasonic but not the dual
layer dvds. I suspect my Panasonic is out dated. Can anyone
please recommend a good dvd player that will play dual layer dvds.
I forgot to mention that I used a Memorex DVD +R DL 2.4X disc.
The burn speed I used was 2.4
Thanks in advance for your help.
Don

Terrible

1. Update your burner's firmware (if available)
http://forum.slysoft.com/showpost.php?p=12794&postcount=10

2. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Are you using inferior blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden (not valueline), Verbatim, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer is yes.
If you use poor quality blank media, then you should expect problems.

For +R DL blank media, use Verbatim made in Singapore or MAM-A 8x +R DL.

3. Try lowering your burn speed (not below 4x; if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x instead of 16x; an 8x burn speed on 16x rated media wouldn't be a bad idea either)

4. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom" before burning
http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=476 (step 3)

5. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems)

6. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in Clonedvd (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.

7. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Insert the problematic backup disc, select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your backup is bad (which is the most likely case), your optical drive may be slowly dying, or your optical drive simply doesn't like the disc (or your choice of blank media)--even if the disc looks fine.

Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 6)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore or MAM-A 8x +R DL, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")

Also, check the preview screen in Clonedvd to ensure you're backing up the proper title.

I used a Memorex DVD +R DL 2.4X disc.

Actually The Memorex are not that bad if you have certain DVD burner. it really sometime is only in the burner you have & how old is it.

I Personally used for my DL burner's delights is a LG Supermulti system Read all brands of DL disc burns & plays with a hitch..

As 4 your DVD player might just favor more - R Disc then +R I had MANY Dvd Players in the past that were that way. Read one format & not the other.

Hey Webslinger...thanks for all the great info.
I tried the disc that I burned at a friends place
and it played fine on his DVD player...his is newer
than mine. So the problem is with my older DVD
player. I will check into buying better quality dvds
in the future. Thanks again.

yes webman...

Try almost three years & counting.
I wouldn't buy junk if down the road i would get Junk in return.. (as in playback)

also another fancy DVD DL delight is the grand ol' HP DL...
Love them price cheap & play great.

Like I said before IF You can Find the perfect burner which there not that many around... to me a perfect burner is a burner that can last me 3 years or more and put out great DVDs. I been very lucky that my cheap sony burner which does not like Memorex DVD +R DL but love every thing else including HP & TDK DL. still put out the back-ups with ease. now My LG Loved them Memorex DVD +R DL

also I will not be force into hunting down only the best DL price high disc just because some folk tales of a bad product which is spread about on the internet which is not 100 percent true. when I personally has burn over 500 Memorex DVD +R DL in the past three years & none has gone bad.

like I said burner are very very different inso many ways yes they are some that will not burn Memorex DVD +R DL & on the other hand they are some that will not burn Verbatim from any corner of the globe. same goes with DVD Players like sony as a example DVD players have a very bad issue when trying to run Verbatim of all kind do that means I throw out the verbatim i burnt NO because 500 other different brand player play the disc great. so go figure.

UGLY... 2 the bone

Maybe they did it to prove it wasn't a bad disc? So they tried it on a friend's player. Frankly, I would have done this, myself, before posting. They never said Webslinger said it was the DVD player.

Some DVD players are more picky than others but regardless of a standalone having no problems with garbage quality media the fact remains that a couple years down the line you might have a backup that doesn't work in any DVD players. Wasted time, money and effort.

I'd recommend they look at using better quality discs first. And, just as food for thought, some people like to say some DVD players have no issues with garbage media. DVD players die. Then you are stuck with garbage backups and needing to find a new DVD player that has no problems with said backups.

As 4 your DVD player might just favor more - R Disc then +R I had MANY Dvd Players in the past that were that way. Read one format & not the other.

There are three main factors for +R readability: booktype, the reflective layer, and the quality of the burn. The reflective layers of discs vary (that promotes compatibility issues). But the format itself has very little to do with compatibility, provided your burner supports bitsetting changes for +R blank media.

If you were not using Verbatim +R DL booktyped to "dvd-rom", it really doesn't surprise me that your older dvd players can't read your backups.

Again, use Verbatim +R DL (preferably made in Singapore) or MAM-A +R DL with the booktype set to "dvd-rom".

It's possible your dvd player is incapable of reading dvd+R DL unless the booktype is changed to "dvd-rom".

Try almost three years & counting.

Then consider yourself fortunate, as I've encountered a significant quantity of Memorex +R DL (Ritkek D01 and S04) that have failed in under 6 months (that showed half-decent quality scans initially).

I wouldn't buy junk

You are, mostly, if you're using Memorex.

CMC MAG D01

Yuck

Players like sony as a example DVD players have a very bad issue when trying to run Verbatim of all kind

I don't know where you're getting your information from, but I have not had any issues playing Verbatim backups on over four different model Sony dvd players (over 8 Sony players) where I use to work.
