A Layman's Guide to Shrinking Blu-ray Size on Hard Drive

I tried 2 different movies (Ratatoulle and Surfsup) and experienced the same problem -- I used TSsplitter (TSsplitter 1.00, downloaded from fast forward projects, they say 1.00 is the latest version) to join seamless branching discs (some 20+ streams in Rat and 3 streams in Surf). Then I used TSremux 0.0.19 to get rid of unwanted audio streams.
When I play final .m2ts file (I use PowerDVD 7.3, version that came with LG combo drive) I get some video freezing issues which appear to occur at the point where files have been joined. What strange is that audio plays normally but video stream seems to freeze for 3-4 seconds then normal playback continues. I am not sure if it's PowerDVD issue, but other non-seamless movies (CasinoR, Prestige) converted with TSremux play without any problem. Does anybody else have this problem ?

Thanks, Davie.

Update: I just set up MPC with Arcsoft decoders as described in here:

http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=12549

..and I no longer have "video freezing at joint point" problem when playing with MPC, so it appears to be PowerDVD problem -- there is a small, barely noticable millisecond "skip" where streams have been joined but I am sure if you don't know where to look you will probably not notice it.

you say "Make sure to check off “bypass audio alignment”, some TrueHD streams will otherwise stall out" yet your picture shows a tick in the box.

Should there be a tick yes or no ??

thanks mate !

Hey Jamie

I'll change the wording to be more precise.

Yes, enable bypass audio alignment.

Can you reauthor the final two files (m2ts and sup) into a Blu Ray disc? Either BDMV or BDAV?

Thanks for a great guide! Really helps out newbies like myself!

Hey Chew

Thats both thoughtful and a great question, though not having a bd-r burner myself I'm not 100% sure of playback results.

TSremux can output bluray format structure natively. The guide I used courtesy of hdbits & hardocp.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1234100

Scenarist isn't required anymore for HDDVD's as the new superstar, TSmuxer, can mux anything into m2ts.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104

I don't believe subtitles would come through until either TSmuxer supports it or we create a menu structure ala NeroVision AVCHD style.

Good Luck

Hey R,

Thanks for the reply. I actually used your method where I just removed the stream folder and made a new one with the two files. I used Roxio DVDit HD Pro to burn the BDMV folder. Will test it out at the store on a stand-alone player tomorrow.

Here's another question, is there a way to author an m2ts to a BDAV folder or even a way to convert an m2ts to an Hi-Def Mpg?

Thanks!
Chew

Hey Chew

Doesn't Nero output to BDAV?

When I get home I'll test with a .m2ts

Let me know if it works and how you did it. I've got the two files, just looking on getting it onto a BDAV disk :)

Thanks R!

Hey Chew

Whoa, this wasn't as straight-forward as I expected. No BD-R drive so all playback was software.

Test was Speed with DTS-MA audio done through guide:

1. Through NeroVision:

First tried without demuxing to ES, NV imported but BD output has no playback through PDVD or Showtime.

Demuxed into ES w/.ac3, output does play but AV sync is a deal breaker.

2. Through TSremux:

Selected bluray output, resulting folder structure does play in Showtime, PDVD has vid only.

With no BD-R, all playback was simulated through virtual mounts...not a true test (or very meaningful) by any stretch. On top of that, .srt subtitles was a no go all the way through...good times.

I'm guessing either AVCHD format or maybe scenarist would be my next logical step.

How was playback on your end with the standalone?

Good Luck

Ryan

I couldn't get resulting blu ray structure from remuxing to play in Showtime.

Second, I can't see the thread by Pate and it says no longer accepting registrations... Can you post what is over there, please?

Thanks!!

Hello!

I promised to write a simple guide how to hex-edit the files that result from running TSRemux and outputting to Blu-Ray format so that you get subtitles to show.

I have only tested the result with PowerDVD and with a single subtitle track, so YMMV when using a stand-alone player and/or several subtitle tracks. This should work as a starting point for experimenting, though.

You will need a hex editor, I use "HHD Software Free Hex Editor" (typing that to Google should get you the right place if you don't yet have a hex editor). This free editor can only handle very small files, but luckily that's all you need for this operation.

Step 1: Run TSRemux, and select the video stream, audio stream you wish to keep, and the subtitle stream you wish to keep. Set output to Blu-Ray, and let TSRemux do it's magic.

Step 2: Go to the BDMV\PLAYLIST directory, there should be a file called 00000.mpls. Open this with a hex editor, and you should see something like the following (without the yellow highlighted boxes.

Playlist.gif

Step 3: Replace the HEX values 00 90 with 12 00 on a row that shows a language code. This is the PID value of the subtitle track, which TSRemux erroneously leaves at 0090 when it should be 1200.

Step 4: Replace the HEX value 91 (stream type "Interactive Graphics") with 90 (stream type "Presentation Graphics") for this subtitle stream. The following 3 characters after the stream type is the language code of the subtitle, change this to the actual subtitle language if necessary.

My theory is the the author of TSRemux left a small bug in the code, when the code should replace the stream type 91 with 90, it erroneously overwrites the PID 1200 with 0090.

After this the subtitles should in fact work in PowerDVD, however, if the language code does not match the language code in BDMV\CLIPINF\00001.clpi, PowerDVD will show the subtitle language as "Undefined".

Step 5: Thus, hex-edit the BDMV\CLIPINF\00001.clpi file as well, changing the language on the row that shows 12 00 (PID) and 90 (stream type) to be the same as in the playlist.

Clipinf.gif

Step 6: All done, enjoy your remuxed Blu-Ray with subtitles!

blu-ray takes a good while longer to Remux than hd-dvd :(

Hey guys I am getting a unhandled exception when I try and load a .mts into tsremux v.019. Any suggestions?

Hi Chew, How can you use DVDdit HD Pro to burn the BDMV folder?

Please. let me known, because i try to use but i can;t....thank you

Hi mode39,

This is going off memory as Im not on my A/V PC right now...
Open Roxio DVD It Pro...
Go the Burn Menu at the top and select Burn Disk
From the Disc Type dropdown menu, select Blu Ray.
Below that in the source dropdown, select from Volume
Click Browse and find your root folder that contains the BDMV and Certificate directories that you remuxed from tsremuxer.
Hit Burn! That's it.

It's off memory, so hope it's accurate and is of help.

Hey, can you help me... I have a Panasonic BD30K blu ray player I just bought over the weekend... Discs I burn with PowerProducer, ULead, and Roxio (with transcoding mpegs) all worked in the player, but lost significant quality. For some reason, though, I cannot for the life of me get a tsremux'd Blu Ray output to work. The player comes up and says Found "BD" disc and then goes to "Play" on the display. Shortly after, goes to 00:00 and remains black on the screen and never begins playing. Is there something I need to do to get them to work on set-top players?

Thanks!
Chew

Usually closing / opening tsremux solves this, I've gotten it before when opening a .m2ts that was already being edited.

Hey Chew

Must.

Get.

Burner.

Until that happens I'm afraid my 2 cents will be just that.

Good Luck
