I am currently using AnyDVD and CloneDVD as a trial. I own Nero Recode2. I have been able to backup DVD's using the AnyDVD and CloneDVD combination. I have also been able rip the DVD using AnyDVD and then burn using Recode.

My problem came when I tried to backup directly to DVD using AnyDVD and Recode. I got an "unable to read file" error part way through the process.

My questions are...

1) Are there any known issues with AnyDVD and Recode?
2) Does ripping degrade the video in any way or is it a file copy with the unwanted bits removed?
3) Does anyone have opinions on quality differences between CloneDVD and Recode (or other software)?

Here's how to rip using Anydvd:

If you're using 6.x versions of Nero and have more than one optical drive in your system, it's best to try to import directly from your burner. I had the same problem, contacted Nero, and was told it was a known issue. Nero 7.x versions do not have this problem (you can import from a dvd-rom drive for example).

My questions are...

Other than what I stated above, there's nothing that I'm aware of. Please ensure you're using the latest version of Recode for your version of Nero (that is, make sure you update Nero): http://www.nero.com/Downloads.html

2) Does ripping degrade the video in any way or is it a file copy with the unwanted bits removed?

No, it doesn't degrade the video.

3) Does anyone have opinions on quality differences between CloneDVD and Recode (or other software)?

Yes. Clonedvd2 is more compatible with Anydvd, so this is your best solution for backing up movies with Anydvd. Clonedvd2 is faster at transcoding than Nero. Clonedvd2 allows you to retain menus over split discs, unlike Recode and Shrink. Recode allows you to split discs anywhere (not just at chapter markers). Recode's transcoder (picture) quality is superior to Clonedvd2 provided "advanced analysis" is selected, at the cost of a longer time spent transcoding to produce that improved picture quality. You can of course rip using Clonedvd2 and import that rip into Recode if you wish. If you like Anydvd, it's best to have Clonedvd2 in your arsenal to ensure compatibility in the event an issue should arise.

If it were me I would use AnyDVD with CloneDVD2, and no I have not had any problems with Recode and AnyDVD, that said I think the CloneDVD2 is a tad better than recode.

On the quality question I have personally ran a few test of myself between CloneDVD 2 which I purchased a 1 week ago and Recode 2 and I wasn't able to tell the difference up to 80% compression, I used The Matrix Reloaded movie only (81% compression) for that test. I then used Flyboys movie only (72% compression) and was able to tell the difference (not much) but if you are a perfectionist like me, when it comes to quality it was enough (my wife laughed at me for doing such a test) I also didn't use Recode 2's High Quality Mode (which I always use on compressions of 70% or more) that way the test would be apples to apples. So if I were you I would purchase CloneDVD 2 and use it as insurance in case you run into a problem DVD Recode 2 can't handle like I do.

HOPE THIS HELPS

"Apples to Apples" would be to compare highest quality mode each program has to offer. At any percentage. Ya, Recode2's quick mode is pretty comparable to CloneDVD. However, Recode2 and DVDShrink when set to do it the long way - both blow CloneDVD out of the water for heavy reduxing.

I doubt it "blows CloneDVD out of the water." The difference between quick mode and deep analysis is barely visible to the human eye, and a waste of time in my opinion.

The difference is *notable*, my wife can see it as well.

CloneDVD2, which incidentally is not made by Slysoft at all, but Elaborate Bytes (Elby) in Switzerland, would not even be a "mover and shaker" on this forum were it not for some (apparant?) marketing agreement between Slysoft and Elby. This must be a one way agreement, because I note the Elby site does not cross-market AnyDVD for Slysoft.

Slysoft's AnyDVD is a truely remarkable (and amazing) product!
In my humble opinion, Elby outta be licking Slysofts sneakers every single day for letting thier quite average products jump on the gravy train with AnyDVD in the 1st place. AnyDVD is the "kingmaker" here, plain and simple.

Clonedvd2 is a great program. It's easy to use and very fast at transcoding. That said the transcoder quality difference is quite apparent.

The next test didn't even bother Clonedvd2.

"CloneDVD and DVD2ONEv2 were not used any more for this test as their results were too poor the last time:

What's noted first is how fast Clonedvd2 is. And what's noted after is the picture quality in comparison to Shrink.

You're kidding right? I own CloneDVD2, I know what it is, lol.

Try this... take any movie of the Lord of the Rings extended trilogy and stick the main movie portion (as title 1 and title2) on a single DVD5. Use CloneDVD and Shrink.... (you may have to do 2 passes to get it that small)
Then look for the difference. Both of them will show serious compression artifacts.... but the result differece at that level of abuse is very wide.

This is yet another reason why I very rarely compress anything. It seems to me that if people truly were concerned about picture quality they would either split across two single layer discs or use Verbatim +R DL instead of messing around with transcoders and encoders. But that's just my opinion . . .

OF COURSE it is.... that's why I picked it. The more *stress* you put a transcoder under, the more you can see the differences.

CloneDVD2 compresses just fine, the copy looks nearly the same as the original. The point I am making is that, in my opinion, the small difference in picture quality is not worth using DVD Shrink.

Explain that to me SLOWLY - considering Shrink is free and you gotta PAY for the lesser CloneDVD2?
