Anyone having problems playing ripped movies on Toshiba Laptops?

Hey I know, It's strange. A friend of mine has two Toshiba Laptops, one with XP Pro and the other VISTA. Problem is they can't play any of my ripped movies on the laptops. they have no problem playing them on a cheap little player from Wal-Mart players. I can play the same copies on my XPS M1710 and my home DVD players. Is there some special protection that they have to see to play the ripped copies? The Toshiba laptops play regular DVD OK. Any ideas???
