AnyDVD 6.1.7.4 and CloneDVD 2.9.1.2
Win XP SP2
Drive:TSSTCORP CD/DVDW TS-H552B TS11 1125
Movie: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (R1, U.S.), release 10/2/07
Media: TDK dvd-r 16x

I am having problems backing up this movie. There seems to be no issues or error messages appearing when I burn the movie. After I put it in my dvd player or computer the trailers play fine. when I get to the menu and press play it freezes and acts like the movie is not there. Same issue is occurring with 1408. I looked over the disks and they don't have any scratches and I have the current firmware for my burner. When burning the movie only the dvd plays for about a minute then pixelates then stops, I haven't had any issues with anything else, except for blade (waiting for an official update for anydvd!!!)

Scratches/flaws are not always visible but since you are having problems with two different discs.....I would suggest trying a better brand of media...... Verbatim or Ty.

Ok. I will go with the different disc method. Hopefully my local Sam's or Staples will have some.

9. Why are my backups freezing, skipping, or showing a blocky pixellated mess during playback?

1. Update your burner's firmware (if available)
http://forum.slysoft.com/showpost.php?p=12794&postcount=10

2. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Are you using inferior blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer is yes.
If you use poor quality blank media, then you should expect problems.

3. Try lowering your burn speed a little (if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x or 8x instead of 16x)

4. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom"
http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=476 (step 3)

5. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems)

6. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in whatever burning program you're using (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.

7. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Insert the problematic backup disc, select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your backup is bad (which is the most likely case), your optical drive may be slowly dying, or your optical drive simply doesn't like the disc (or your choice of blank media)--even if the disc looks fine.

Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 6)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")

Does the *original disc* play correctly on your computer with AnyDVD running?
This is the *first thing* you should always test. If the original doesn't play, the backup won't either.

:( Both DVDs actually play with no problems. It's just strange that everything burns okay and plays with no issues, except for these movies. I will give the better brand of media a try. Hopefully this will help. Payday is coming up on Friday and I will grab one of the suggested brands, then provide an update.

why are answers in post #4 and #8 the same?
please do not post identical threads:policeman:
:D;)

They are not identical threads. They are posts. And I'm repeating the information because no one appears to read it.

I wasn't ignoring you WS. Normally when my disc pixelate or have issues it is usually in the trailers and movie also. It just seemed strange that the trailers were okay and movie was only having the issue. I got a pack of maxell and FF came out with no problems. Thanks for everyones help. I guess I will have to stop buying cheap media :(

Well, use whatever you're happy with . . .

But regular Maxell is not considered good quality blank media either.

Use Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality

Personally, all I use now are Verbatim DVD+R and DL DVD+R, and occasionally Verbatim Lightscribe DVD+R. Virtually every other brand I've tried has issues.

Many companies buy their stock from a few makers, then put their own brand labeling on it. Ritek is a big supplier, and their media is the worst I've ever used. I once bought a 100 pack of Ritek blank DL DVD+R. Five discs from that pack were good. The other 95 failed verifications scans, and froze and pixelated on playback.

I too have went from DVD-R's to erbatim DVD+R and DL DVD+R and booktype to DVD-ROM as it does play better on most systems.
