Can we talk about Pop ups on this forum?

About 2 months ago, I starting getting 5 at a time, sometimes when I'm not even surfing the net. And, believe it or not, some of them are for p0rn sites and it shows nudity. I have 6 kids at home and would prefer them not to see obscene pop ups. Can anyone suggest a reliable pop up blocker? Kinda skeered to use one that google suggests. Would rather have one that fellow "back uppers" have tried and would recommend.

Thanks everyone.

Google toolbar or yahoo are great but I hear they contain spyware?

Usually one only gets porn popups if they visit porn sites or bad sites in general.

Some features in Google Toolbar do involve info being sent to Google but these features can be disabled and I never use them. They're the advanced features.

I'm a bit confused. Do the pop-ups originate from the forum website or not? You said you get pop-ups sometimes when you aren't even surfing the net? Forgive me for asking, but have you made sure you haven't somehow gotten hit by adware BHO's or something along those lines?

For IE I like and have used Google Toolbar for ages for blocking ads. I used to also use AdSubtract as well as Meaya Popup Ad Filter. With those running I never got pop-ups in IE. You could also use IEpro which ads Adblock Plus type features along with others to IE.

In the end, personally, I use Firefox along with Adblock Plus. I'm more than happy.

Edit: If you haven't already run a scan with Spybot S&D and/or Lavasoft Ad-Aware. A free online scan with Kaspersky Anti-Virus might be useful, as well.

It may sound like you have adware/spyware/malware/something-ware.

For popup blockers etc, nothing can beat Ad Muncher. With a list updated every single day. Direct support via IRC/email/forum which you cannot beat. Plus you can use it on pretty much any program which connects to the net!

Yeah. It used to be all I knew before I got really into computers.

I used the original Netscape browser until I was somewhat forced into using IE thanks to AOL and their destruction of Netscape. I also used Opera for a bit. I wasn't much of a fan for the Mozilla SeaMonkey Project, either. I didn't want a suite. It was the release of Firefox that got me to switch from using IE except when it's necessary.

As Webslinger said, Netscape 9 is basically a branded Firefox release. It works nicely and has the old Netscape look. This is the first wise decision AOL made with Netscape as a browser in ages.

No reason to use any programs like that. I use Firefox and get less than one pop-up a day. You cannot block every single pop-up.

Actually, I'm using it right now, and I have been fairly impressed with it so far (I disabled a lot of the excess community stuff). I also have Firefox on my system. I tested Opera for a little while. It's quick, but I didn't care for it.

Anyway, I haven't had a single pop-up this week using Netscape 9.

Wow, got lots of responses, and I do appreciate it.

#1 I am the only one who uses this computer and I do not visit porn sites.

#2 I do have and love the google toolbar. If deleting would help, I'm willing to do that. Someone said something about advanced features, do you know how to get to it?

#3 I would prefer to use IE over firefox or netscape.

#4 I get pop ups from every site I visit, even slysoft. They aren't specifically slysoft popups, just random ones.

#5 I'm gonna try the Ad Munch. Also, I've heard lots about Spybot S&D, do any of you use it?

You don't get porn pop-ups if you haven't visited bad websites, not necessarily porn.

Yeah, I used to think the same thing, but now I get them. Ok, maybe it wasn't porn, but it did show some nipplage that I didn't think was appropriate for a pop-up for everone to see.

You may have fallen prey to malware of some kind. There are many different ways it may have happened.

PageRank involves sending info to Google as does using the Translate Menu. They've changed the setup of the program so the advanced features aren't as easily and quickly disabled as they used to be. They're easy to disable but not as easily identified.

It's possible for an adware BHO or some form of malware to redirect which pop-ups you see or make you end up having more.

I've used Spybot S&D quite a bit. It's very handy, IMHO, but you always should be careful and make sure you actually pay attention to what you remove if things show up.
