All the movies worked fine that I copied in my regular DVD Player. I just bought a Samsung DVD-HD870 upconvert DVD Player. I've tried watching 3 movies that I copied using ANY DVD and I get picsilating and junping over complete sections of the DVD. I also get unbalanced sound (not synced with the picture) As I write this I'm watching a DVD that was not copied and so far have not had the problem. Samsung said it shouldn't happen and are sending me a new replacement. Is there anything I can do or is ANY DVD copied discs not able to work with upconvertion. I'm watching everything on a new Dell 37" LCD HDTV. If worse comes to worse I'll keep the samsung for uncopied movies and get anothe non-upconvert for the copied movies if I have to. PLEASE HELP ME???? Thanks in advance for any info you may have.

12. My backups play on my computer or standalone dvd player, but not in something else. Why?

First, if the backup is playing in a standalone dvd player or on your computer, that means Anydvd and whatever backup program you used worked.

The most common reason why you're having this problem (if the backup doesn't work in a standalone dvd player) is due to a compatibility issue between the blank media you're using and whatever you're using to play the backup in (standalone dvd player, for example). Basically your dvd player, dvd-rom drive, etc. doesn't like the blank media you're using (or if you're using +R media, you didn't change the booktype to "dvd-rom"). You can try choosing other blank media (+r instead of -r, for example, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")--or buy a different standalone dvd player (or a different dvd-rom drive, burner, etc.).

If you're using dvd-r media and your standalone dvd player gives you a message similar to ""Play Prohibited, please check disc", use dvd+r media instead and change the booktype to "dvd-rom" (see "b)" below). In all likelyhood, your standalone dvd player will refuse to play dvd-r media.

a) Are you using junk blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer to this question is "yes".
b) Click this and read FULLY (especially take a look at point 4 for more information on bitsetting/booktyping, but all points are very important)

The same factors also apply to why the backup doesn't play in your computer (but there can be other factors including buggy or poorly installed dvd player software, bad drivers, etc.).

It's also possible the playback device/player you're using is slowly dying.

Help! My Backups are freezing or are a blocky pixelated mess!

1. Update your burner's firmware (if available)
http://forum.slysoft.com/showpost.php?p=12794&postcount=10

2. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Are you using inferior blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer is yes.
If you use poor quality blank media, then you should expect problems.

3. Try lowering your burn speed (not below 4x; if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x instead of 16x; an 8x burn speed on 16x rated media wouldn't be a bad idea either)

4. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom"
http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=476 (step 3)

5. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems)

6. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in Clonedvd (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.

7. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Insert the problematic backup disc, select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your backup is bad (which is the most likely case), your optical drive may be slowly dying, or your optical drive simply doesn't like the disc (or your choice of blank media)--even if the disc looks fine.

Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 6)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")

Also, check the preview screen in Clonedvd to ensure you're backing up the proper title.

Problem Playback

I have over 150 copied movies at this time. They have worked in every DVD player used so far from my computer to a hand held DVD player. I just purchased a Dell 37" LCD HDTV and a Samsung DVD-HD870 Upconvert DVD Player. So far every copied movie I have has pixilated on the screen, paused for as much as 30 seconds while sound continues and then when starting again the sound is slightly off from the picture. As I say they work with every DVD Player I have used except this new Samsung. Any suggestions would be helpfull. Samsung told me to return the DVD player and Dell is sending another but I get the fealing this will still happen.

Do not create multiple threads about the exact same issue please, and my previous replies still apply.

The issue here is media / player compatibility. Unless I missed it, you have not named the media you used for your backups.

Hello RMA,

It sounds to me like when you try to upconvert from a backup copy of your original, it doesn't have the same effect as when you upconvert the original (?).

I do not have a DVD player that upconverts or upsamples; are those two meanings synonymous with one another?

Is the backup copy compressed? or are they on DL's - not compressed?

Check out this thread HERE.

If they are on a single layer (compressed) then my guess would be the pixelation is caused by the degredation of quality. I'm thinking when you take an original movie at about 8GB's, compress it to about 4GB's on a single layer, then try to upconvert the compressed version, there may be some serious side affects.

If I were in your situation, I would backup another movie on a DL, and test that one out on the Upconverting DVD player. If the results are the same, then that rules out the over compression theory.

I use Nero Recode to burn to single layer Inkjet Verbatim DVD+R's or Inkjet TDK DVD+R's. The quality is great on my 50" Pioneer Plasma. I will have to try this upconversion to see if it is worth it.

When I use CloneDVD to burn the same movie, I see pixelation every now and then. If I use CloneDVD, I use it to burn to DVD-9 and not DVD-5. I use CloneDVD to do the things Nero cannot, but when I use it, it is always DVD-9.

I would try a different brand DVD upconversion player. I doubt it is the display causing this problem.

Check out this thread here.

Upconversion doesn't explain the jumping. Media/player compatibility does.

Upconverting DVD Players vs. Backed Up dvd's

My Sony upconverting 5 disc dvd player handles backed up versions of my dvd's with no problem - including ones with additional compression to fit them onto a single layer media. Thye look terrific on my 46" lcd 1080p TV.
If your dvd's play ok on a different player, my guess is your Samsung dvd player is in finicky mode with burned media - which I've read they are prone to be. I would return it.

I probably would as well. That said, using Taiyo Yuden Premium +R with the booktype changed to "dvd-rom" should work fine.

I also are having problems with my Tevion up converting DVD player. The DVD discs that I make using CloneDVD2 usually breakup (stuttering and Pixelating) towards the end of the disc. I am using Verbatim DVD+R Super AZO discs, and I burn them at 2.4 speed, and my burner burns them as a DVD-ROM. All the discs play perfectly, using a standard DVD player.
The Tevion plays original discs, bought or rented beautifully.
I also have come to the conclusion that the fault lies with the Tevion player, but one interesting developement that perhaps someone could comment on, is that if I burn a DVD+RW Re-writeable disc using CloneDVD2, the disc plays perfect, no stuttering, no pixellation. Not one DVD Rewritable disc has failed to play.
I have spent hours trying to find a reason for the fault, I have replaced my burner, tried all the speed variations, tried reducing the size of the disc, using custom burn, to 4300, Using DVD-R, nothing I have tried works except using DVD+RW discs, and it gets expensive building up my collection.
Any other suggestions I could try please?

What's the rated speed of these discs? No one should be burning that slowly on 16x rated blank media. Really, you should avoid burning that slowly in general.

Since these discs will play in another standalone dvd player, what you're experiencing (stuttering, etc.) is either poor burn quality (which this new dvd player is less tolerant of) or a media compatibility issue. Try Taiyo Yuden Premium 8x +R blank media (do not burn at 2x) and change the booktype to "dvd-rom".

Thanks Webslinger for the reply.
As I stated in my previous post, I have already tried all the various speed options, and my burner is already set to burn DVD+r as DVD-rom, non of which made any difference. I will try your suggestion about using Taiyo Yuden premium discs, and see if that rectifies the problem.
Have you any idea why Rewritable discs always play faultlessly?

I have resolved the problem I was having with my Tevion Upscaling DVD player.
All my backups now work perfectly, I can even use 'cheap discs', they play perfectly also.
What have I done to resolve this issue?
Thrown the Tevion DVD Player in the rubbish bin, and bought a Sony DVP-NS76H DVD player.
It works brilliantly. No more blocky scenes, or faultering stops.
The Sony dealer, I bought the player from, let me try one of my backups, a cheap Tesco disc, that I was having problems with on the demo model in the shop, it worked ok.
My intention is not to advertise Sony, there are other quality DVD Players in the market, but it certainly cured my problems and headaches, and I have learnt an important lesson, the cheapest is not always the best, and I hope this post may help others who are having similar problems.
Thanks Webslinger for your help in resolving this issue.
