Recommended movies to watch or avoid

I agree, The Prestige was very good!

I thought Night at the Museum was funny and cute.

I wasn't impressed the Casino Royal...may be a nice action movie but not James Bond movie level. IMHO

I agree totally...

On the Bonds movie.. This recent one makes him look like a blood hungry assassin... But the old ones he was more of a smooth guy who killed when needed... and just not enough toys in this one.. to be a James Bond movie...

surprise, surprise...

It's not true that I hate Will Ferrel, I just hate most of his movies.
So there I was expecting to loathe "Stranger Than Fiction"...
I disagree with the ending, they should have killed Harold Crick off, but it was a movie compelling enough for me to order the DVD.
It's just become part of my permanent collection, and I'm... '"**!!'" ... in shock.
Maybe I shouldn't be, he was great in "The Producers" ( That's what DVDs are for, I loved it and it will pay off even if it did flop in the movie theater!! ) so I do think he's good but ...( fill in movie debacle of your choice ) .
Movies may have been simpler once but then I wouldn't have had two great DVDs by an actor I thought I loathed.
The collection continues.

Hannibal Rising was surprisingly good. It's more of a story than a horror flick though. It wasn't fantastic, but it was by no means bad either.

I just watched Apocalypto. I've never been much of a fan of subtitled movies, but...THIS WAS FANTASTIC! My wife and I really enjoyed it. I thought I'd roll the dice and buy it, even though I knew very little about it. I'm so glad I did so.

I saw Shrek 3 at the theater and will have to get it when it comes out on DVD. I laughed all the way through it!

A couple of sleepers that are great:
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -is hilarious
The Holiday - Chick flick, but a good one

Others I really like:
Seven
Lucky Sleven

I also like many already mentioned, but don't think these were.

Best grossing Bond movie yet. The earlier movies made for a "pretty Bond" as compared to Ian Flemmings books. This Bond is closest to the literary Bond as has yet been done.

PS: Webslinger.... comments on The Prestige or The Usual Suspects??

PS: Webslinger.... comments on The Prestige

I enjoyed The Prestige; I especially enjoyed the last line of the movie. At first, I didn't like the film because I found the two main characters to be repulsive (not nice people). However, the more I watched the film, the more I enjoyed it (I just viewed the film as a fight between two scumbags, and I enjoyed the moral message that the film was trying to convey about people generally not wanting to see all the filth, etc., in society; they want to be "fooled".). I also found the fighting between Tesla's people and Edison's clever (and based on historical reality).

The Usual Suspects??

I'm sorry to say I did not enjoy this film despite the twist ending. I do not enjoy films where, in my opinion, criminals (or at least, immoral behaviour) are placed on some sort of pedestal (another reason why I do not like The Godfather--despite that film being considered one of the top 10 American films of all time).

I usually enjoy films where I can at least empathisze with one of the main characters (I did think the acting in the Usual Suspects was great; I just didn't enjoy the film). And I fully expect my opinion to be in the minority (that said, majority opinion does not prove much of anything when it comes to art, especially when attempting to prove its quality). I must also say I did respect, at least, the thought (the work) that went into creating the twist ending.

Regardless, thank you very much for recommending those films to me (very much appreciated), and I did enjoy The Prestige.

All I can say (morally) about the Usual Suspects is that you're supposed to empathise with Keaton... who is sincerely trying to "get it right" and still gets sucked (and blackmailed) back into this mess - to his ultimate demise.

I suppose . . .
I just found Spacey's character pretty repulsive, and the film ends with you, the audience, kind of fixated on how supposedly clever he is.

As I say, I'm sure the issue lies with my tastes (I have fairly discriminating tastes, I suppose).

Ya, but so repulsive he won an Acadamy Award for it. :)
As I understand it, he knew of the plot twist before any filming.

Yes, I was aware of that actually before watching the film. Again, I thought the acting was great, and I did appreciate the twist.

I am also thankful that you recommended the film to me.

Add Rocky Balboa to my hitlist. Best Rocky since #1.
Directors commentary usually blows - this one was great.

I finally got around to watching Green Street Hooligans. Thanks for recommending it everyone.

Another one that just came out that was MUCH better than I expected was Black Snake Moan.

I was thinking about getting that one. I'll take your recommendation and get it.:)

I, too, was quite surprised at Black Snake Moan .. was put off by the cover and what it lent to my impression ... it was a very good movie and the gal's acting was outstanding .. she really got into her role. Also, the special features on the dvd were very nice as well.
