I am using an External USB DVD-RW. When I attempt to burn an image to a DL-DVDRW disc I keep getting the following error ( Writting to ATAPI DVD-DD 2X16X4X16 failed!) Man can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong. Thank you.

What drive is this? Does it support DL RW discs?
 
The drive is an ASUS model Dual Layer burner. The enclosure is model CD-509-combo.

What's the model number? And do you know if it can burn dvd-rw dl media (would be a pretty neat trick)?

Anyway, try updating to 5.3.0.5

I have verified that the Burner I have is Dual Layer compatible. I have updated to the new version and still get the same error. basically it goes from 0% to 100% and gives the failure message. It must be an issue with the external enclosure I guess.

Yeah, but I'm a bit confused about your description of the media you're using.
+R DL = Double
-R DL = Dual

RW can just stand for the DVD+RW Alliance. "RW" appears on all +R blank media packaging--and it doesn't mean rewritable in that case. http://www.dvdrw.com/

Can you give a media code please? And what is the model of your burner?

What blank media are you using? Specify a) brand name b)type (-R, +R, -RW, +RW, RAM, DL, etc.) c)media code, d) capacity/size, e) batch codes/serial codes (often found printed on the inner plastic hub of the blank disc), and f)country (factory information would be great as well, if possible) where the media was made (look on the physical packaging; do not rely on programs to accurately give you this information).

If you don't know how to obtain media codes, you may find the following programs useful:

Ok, so you're actually using double layer media (not dual), and it's not rewriteable blank media.

RW does, indeed, stand for DVD+RW Alliance in this case. http://www.dvdrw.com/

You're using 8x rated media DL media on a drive that probably only supports a 2x (2.4x) write speed. Again, without you providing us with a model number of your burner, it's difficult to ascertain anything. Regardless, you should be using Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore instead, provided your burner can burn to double layer blank media (and if it does, chances are you should be using MKM001, which is the media code).

Model: Shuttle CR40

I have been told verbatim is the way to go but unfortunately all my local stores in NYC don't carry verbatim. I will have to order some.

Well, that's actually a rebadged BenQ DW1620 (so I did guess well), and it can write to +R DL, but at a max speed of 2.4x. There's no point paying a premium for 8x +R DL media (and 8x +R DL media may not even work well in your burner). Again, I would highly recommend looking for Verbatim +R DL media (made in Singapore). Chances are you could probably look for some online sources.

If you crossflash your firmware, you will likely be voiding your burner's warranty, but I notice in post 50 a person mentions Ricoh based DL blank media (which is what you're using) didn't work properly until changing/updating the burner's firmware. So that's probably your answer (regardless, you should still probably be using Verbatim +R DL (2.4x) media made in Singapore, as that is generally considered to be the best +R DL media available).
