Stopping at 7 percent...write error.

Hi,
I'm loving this program and copied my first two DVDs easily and quickly. However, I'm trying to get Pan's Labyrinth to work, but I cannot do so. It keeps freezing at 7percent and saying there is a write error or a media error. It says there might be a problem with the blank dvd, but its the exact same brand I used earlier, and I've tried three of these DVDs. None work. Any ideas? Help is very very much appreciated!!!

There have been other people that have been having trouble with that movie. A lot have been bad discs. You might try running VSO Inspector or CD/DVD Speed on the disc and see if any errors are detected. They may have had a bunch of bad presses.
But then write errors are usually for bad media.

The problem is a write error, not a read error. That means Clonedvd read the original disc without issue. And while I would prefer not to play guessing games, I suspect this is a blank media issue. Regardless, I would like some answers to my initial reply, in particular question 6.

3) 6.1.5.5 is my AnyDVD. I'm using 2.9.0.3 of CloneDVD for the burning.
6)I'll tell you what I know. The discs are Memorex LightScribe DVD+R. Media Version 1.2 Made is Taiwan. 16x and 4.7g.
7) I'm burning at whatever CloneDVD burns at. I would assume 16x since my drive is extremely new.
8 ) Summary for drive G: (AnyDVD 6.1.5.5)

Drive (Hardware) Region: 0 (not set!)

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 1
Total size: 4024730 sectors (7860 MBytes)

I just realized I answered number 8 incorrectly. However, I'm not using that computer right now. I'll update that tomorrow

By default I think CloneDVD has the preferred speed set to maximum. Even with a newer burner I'd never ever burn at maximum or 16x. I'd pick either 8x or 12x.

You should update both anydvd and clonedvd. Check for firmware upgrades for your writer. If your going to use Memorex (Save your self the headache and buy Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Maxell BQ) I would change the size to 4300 when you rip the movie so it doesn't write to the outside edge. Try writing at 1/2 the rated speed of the media first.

Save yourself some time now and get Taiyo Yuden Premium or Verbatim media. Memorex is not quality media and even if you get it to play now, it probably won't in 6 months. Getting good media now will save you the trouble of having to do it again later.

Even with quality media it's generally not a good idea to burn at max speed. If you get TY or Verb 8x, burn at 6x. If you get TY or Verb 16x, burn at 8-12x.

3. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Use Taiyo Yuden 8x Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality

4. Try lowering your burn speed (not below 4x; if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x instead of 16x; an 8x burn speed on 16x rated media wouldn't be a bad idea either)
5. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom"

6. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems)
7. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in Clonedvd (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.


Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 6)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom)


Also, check the preview screen in Clonedvd to ensure you're backing up the proper title.
