I complained about a drive issue recently. You helped me determine it is a bad drive. I bought a new drive. It burns okay, but here is the problem. When I try to backup a disc this is what I read:

Summary for drive F: (AnyDVD 6.1.6.0)
HP DVD WRITER 940D 3H23 2006/09/02
Drive (Hardware) Region: 0 (not set!)

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 2034304 sectors (3973 MBytes)
Total size: 4013234 sectors (7838 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: Finding Nemo
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1 4!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

When I look at the drive properties under DEVICE MANAGER, it shows that it is REGION 1.

Suggestions? I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Anydvd, the most recent version.

That's because Anydvd is enabled/running.

Provided you're not having issues, you don't need to set the region of the drive.

If you get a CSS warning message from Anydvd (because the drive's region code doesn't match the region of the disc), chances are you can ignore it.

As AnyDVD is "Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!" it is perfectly normal to see region 1 in device manager - AnyDVD is so magical, it fools the entire system (that's why it works so damn well).
Just disable AnyDVD (red fox turns grey) and device manager can access the drive directly.

1) You can usually ignore that error message, and Anydvd will still work properly.

2) If it still doesn't work properly, this is what you do (these instructions assume you're using Windows XP)

1. Right click the fox on your toolbar. Exit Anydvd
2. Click start. Right click on "My computer"--->select "properties".
3.Click on the 'Hardware' tab--->click the 'device manager' button.
4. Open the dvd/cdrom branch---> right click on your optical drive
5. Click "properties".
6. You should have a region tab. From there you can select a region.
7. Select the region that matches the region on the disc
8. Start Anydvd
9. click the fox icon on your toolbar. Go to Video dvd--->settings
10. Change the default to match the region on the disc
11. Click Ok

Keep in mind you have a finite number of times you can change the region code of your drive.
 
I got this warning, which I never saw when my external HP drive was working (that's the one that failed), nor do I get it when my other internal drive is used. Now that I have installed a new HP internal, I get this message.

WARNING:

AnyDvd is unable to crack all CSS Keys on this disc! AnyDvd will guess the correct CSS key, but it is possible that one or more titles on this disc will not play correctly.

et cetera, et cetera.

why would i get this message now, when I didn't get it with the internal/external tandem before, and now only after installing a new burner?

You receive this message sometimes in Anydvd when the region code of your optical drive does not match the region code of the disc.
The region code of your new drive is not set. Consequently, it doesn't match the region code on the disc.

Please refer to my previous reply immediately preceeding this one.
 
I followed your instructions. The Region Setting for my drive is Region 1 (North America/United States). The default setting in AnyDvd is region 1.

I try to use CloneDVD and get this message:

COPY PROTECTION ERROR - THE READ FAILED BECAUSE THE SECTOR IS ENCRYPTED.

I know this isn't a "shrink" forum, but I get the same message when I try it.

A. By the way, if you have installed Anydvd recently, did you reboot yet? If not, try rebooting.

B. Is the problem specific to this retail disc only? Have you tried other retail movies?

C. If the problem is specific to this retail disc, try testing for read errors. Download Nero cd-dvd speed. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed reports read errors, your disc is bad and needs to be exchanged--even if it plays fine.


1. You are attempting to load the disc from "drive f:", right in Clonedvd? You need to specify drive f:.

2. Click the red fox icon on your toolbar. Navigate to videodvd-->css keys. Ensure "use css archive" is unchecked. Actually click the "default" button in Anydvd.

3. Try loading the disc again in Clonedvd. Ensure you specify drive F. If that worked, then stop; don't do step 4.

4. Click the red fox icon on your toolbar. Navigate to "Program Settings". Enable "Safe mode". Try Clonedvd again.

5. If that doesn't work. Click the "default" button in Anydvd again.

6. Do steps 3 and 4 (note that step 4 requires you to post information)

7. Ensure you're using an 80 wire cable (unless it's a SATA internal drive)

8. Ensure DMA is enabled

9. Ensure your burner is set to "master", the cable is attached properly on the back of the drive, and that the jumper is set properly

10. Try another 80 wire cable

Sounds like when you closed AnyDVD to set the region, you did not reboot and restart AnyDVD before running CloneDVD. As a result AnyDVD was not running at that time.

Fortworth, the issue is your filters. I never said you, definitively, had a bad drive. Your old one is probably fine.

Padus ASPI Shell filter driver. Comes with Nero 6.x/7.x.x if you choose to install it, comes with WinDVD Creator, it comes with DiscJuggler and it comes with NVIDIA Purevideo decoder.

Normally, I would consider pfc.sys not to be an issue, but you have it listed 3 times. It should be listed only once--or not at all.

Used by Roxio Easy Media Creator, WinOnCD 6, DragtoDisc and DirectCD.

Cdr4_XP, in particular, is really bad news and needs to go. Dragtodisc and directcd are examples of packet writing software.
Learn to use dvd-ram instead if you want that type of functionality. Packet writing software is horrible.


1. Uninstall the software that installed the filters I quoted. After uninstalling, ensure the four entries I quoted are no longer listed in your filters. PFC should be fine if it's listed once. There's an issue if it's listed three times.

2. Run a registry cleaner program at this point like CCleaner (it's a free program).

If you download ImgBurn it has a feature which allows you to deal with multiple entries. First do as web said and uninstall those apps. If the uninstaller didn't do its job properly open up ImgBurn, Tools > Filter Driver Load Order.

Still no better on the backup front. Still get the encrypted sector message. Did get the DMA issue changed, but it didn't help the backup issues...
The other drive was bad. Tried it with three other CPUS, two notebook, one desktop. DOA!
I have tried multiple retail DVDs. The Nemo one was just a convenient example.

According to what you just posted, I see no evidence that Clonedvd is even installed. If it is, you need to reinstall it.
 
Sorry, it is there. I keep trying to install, uninstall A.D. and C.D.

I can get say, shrink to scan the disc, but get that damn COPY PROTECTION ERROR - THE READ FAILED BECAUSE THE SECTOR IS ENCRYPTED. I still get the same message when Clone DVD scans the disc.

I know it is frustrating for you to try to help, it's just as frustrating for me. I have been working on it for several hours.

This is a brand new, HP 18x internal dvd burner, with current firmware as best I can tell, so says ImgBurn.

Well, that error message generally means that Anydvd isn't working on your system properly. And at this point I'm not sure why it isn't.

I'm not frustrated. I am a little tired after trying to help on the boards most of the day (and it's pretty late where I am).

Your filters look fine now.

Can you answer these two questions for me please?

1. Is the problem specific to this retail disc only? Have you tried other retail movies?

Anydvd is running in the background while you're using Clonedvd, right? Is it red, in colour, on your taskbar?
