CloneDVD will not burn DL disks suddenly

Hey guys,
I've been using CloneDVD2 for a long time now and have had no problems at all until now. I recently updated my computer with a new mobo, SATA hard drives, eVga 8800 video card, and 4 Gigs of RAM. Since doing this, I cannot get CloneDVD to burn to a dual layer disk no matter what I have tried to do and apparently regardless of what DVD title I try. It stills burns just fine to 4.7G DVDs, and does the "reading" portion of the process with the DLs even, but after it swaps to "erasing, formatting" portion, it locks up my computer every time. I have been throughout the forums fairly extensively, but to no avail. I have disabled Nero's inCD, updated the firmware (to vers. 1.0c) for my DVD drives (Sony DRU-820A's--neither will burn, so I don't believe they are going out simultaneously), the drives are enabled for DMA mode, my IDE controller is listed as the "Standard dual channel PCI IDE Controller" (I didn't mess with the nVidia SATA controllers since I don't think they would have any effect), as well as whatever else I have found in the forums. Both CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD are up to date (2.9.0.3/6.1.4.3). The DVDs (so far that I have problems burning to DL (so far) are The Queen, The Prestige, and Flags of Our Fathers. I only use Verbatim DL disks. I have left the burning speed at maximum, but I don't think it ever actually begins to burn at all from the looks of the bottom of the disk, nor have I ever had a problem otherwise burning at max speed. I never receive an error message--it just completely locks up the computer. Here are the status info from AnyDVD:

By the way, I am sure that CloneDVD is "reading" the files properly as I have tried playing the files CloneDVD decoded into DVD files onto my hard drive and they play without any problems at all. Sorry to be so long-winded with this, but I wanted to make sure you had all the info you might need.

I would greatly appreciate your help with this--I have been working on it way too long already. Thanks!

1. Use Anydvd 6.1.5.3 and Clonedvd 2.9.0.7
If you don't know where to look, check the stickies in each respective forum.
I strongly recommend updating to Anydvd 6.1.5.3 (as the version you're using does have a few issues)

2. Do steps 3 and 4 from here please (note that step 4 requires you to post information, and do not start randomly deleting filters)

3. Specify a 4x burn speed in Clonedvd (do not set it to max)

4. ensure dvd -/+ R DL is selected near Clonedvd's quality bar

5. Update your burner's firmware (if available)

Thanks for the quick response Webslinger!

Where do I get those versions you have listed? Both programs are set to automatically update. I even went to the website and the versions I listed are what it shows as the current versions.

I have already done step 3. Since I am using SATA hard drives, I don't think I need to do anything with the nVidia SATA controllers. The IDE PCI Controller has been changed though.

As for Step 4, using the second program listed on that link, the first DVD drive (both are the same model) says:

Let me revise:

1. Uninstall Incd. Reboot. Ensure the two filters I quoted no longer appear in your registry.
Uninstall Nero's Incd until Incdpass and incdm no longer appear in your filters. Don't use packet writing software. I would recommend you learn how to use burning software without having to drag and drop files, since packet writing software not only tends to conflict with Anydvd and other programs--but also because packet writing tends to be unstable and less secure than using dvd-ram. If you prefer dragging and dropping files, I recommend you invest in a dvd-ram burner (and use dvd-ram) instead.

2. Use Anydvd 6.1.5.3 and Clonedvd 2.9.0.7
I strongly recommend updating to Anydvd 6.1.5.3 (as the version you're using does have a few issues)

3. Specify a 4x burn speed in Clonedvd (do not set it to max) when using Verbatim +R DL media.

4. ensure dvd -/+ R DL is selected near Clonedvd's quality bar

5. Update your burner's firmware (if available)

6. I prefer using this method with Verbatim +R DL media instead, since Clonedvd2 will not retain the original layer break position. I would recommend trying it.

Anyway, uninstalling Incd properly will probably fix your issue, but I would still do the other things I mentioned.

Again, thanks for your help Webslinger,

I uninstalled inCD and double checked the filters again. Also installed the new versions of both programs. I already had the latest firmware for my drives. Tried twice to burn the DVD files I had created on the hard drive earlier with CloneDVD and both times resulted in complete lockup of my computer again. Any more suggestions?

I uninstalled inCD and double checked the filters again.

So, Incdpass and incdm are no longer listed, right? Please confirm. Did you reboot after? If not, please do so.

Tried twice to burn the DVD files I had created on the hard drive earlier with CloneDVD

Completely delete those dvd files from your hard drive (as it's possible there was an issue with them from using older versions of Anydvd), and try again with the original source discs using the newer versions of Anydvd and Clonedvd. (4x write speed, "-/+ R DL near the quality bar in Clonedvd).

Also, I'd recommend ensuring your burner is using an 80 wire cable, and that it's installed as master (with the jumper set to master on the back--and ensuring the proper end of the cable is installed).

And if that still doesn't work, then try this method (follow the instructions carefully, step by step).

Yes, I did reboot after uninstalling inCD and after installing the newer versions of Clone- and AnyDVD. Plus, after the two computer freezes. I will now try to recopy the disk using the new versions. It will take a good 15 minutes or so to get to the point where it swaps over to the "erasing, formatting" portion of the process. I will let you know soon what happens!

Hmm, you mentioned it freezes when it attempts writing basically . . .
Your system would be using more power at that point. I wonder if there's an issue with your power supply.

1. Are you overclocking anything? If you are, try not overclocking.
2. I would check your power supply for potential issues.
3. Try a new blank disc
4. I'd recommend ensuring your burner is using an 80 wire cable, and that it's installed as master (with the jumper set to "master" on the back--and ensuring the proper end of the cable is installed).

ide8040pin.jpg

Both cables have 40 pins (well 39 really), but the number of wires differ.

visit http://www.mikeshardware.com/howtos/howto_connect_ide_hd.html

5. Maybe your burner is dying (the capacity to write DL media properly is one of the first things to die quite often with burners). Try it in another system

As for the rest, I am not overclocking anything and I have tried several blank disks (even opening a new spindle). The power supply is a 450W--I would have thought that to be enough--what do you think? I will check the master/slave settings on the two DVD drives shortly. What's the big benefit of the 80 over the 40 wire cable out of curiosity? I am using the really nice cables that came with the new ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus mobo I just put in. CloneDVD just finished decoding the DVD files to the hard drive, so I will try to burn the files as soon as I post this reply. I will let you know what happens in a few minutes.

Here are the new filter displays using the same program from that page you linked me to:

O.k., your filters look fine now.

The power supply is a 450W--I would have thought that to be enough--what do you think?

The 8800 series of video cards demand a lot of power, I thought. I know I'm going to be looking (hard) at 700-800W+ power supplies (from Enermax and Antec, probably) in July. Personally, I feel 450W might not be enough for what you have in your system. Maybe 600W to be safe . . .

"NVIDIA recommends a minimum of a 400 watt power supply to operate a GeForce 8800 GTS, with at least 26 amps on the +12v power rail. That is a bare minimum; however, users with many peripheral devices, drives, or expansion cards will want to invest in a stronger power supply."

from http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTI5MywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

So 450W may not be enough for what you have in your system.

EVGA's 8800 GTX

"Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 28 Amp Amps.)"
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37523

Yeah, actually, I'd say your power supply doesn't cut it at this point.

What's the big benefit of the 80 over the 40 wire cable out of curiosity?

Grounding, mostly . . . However, most burners won't work properly with a 40 wire cable.

I am using the really nice cables that came with the new ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus mobo I just put in.

I find it unlikely any motherboard company would be supplying 40 wire cables anymore.

Just got back from trying to burn those files. It just locked up again. I took out both of my drives and looked at the jumpers. One is set to master the other was set to cable select, but is now set to slave. It still failed to burn after setting it to slave. I am sure I'm right, but I might as well ask just to make sure: the master does belong at the end of the cable, not the one in the middle, correct?

By the way, the cable supplied by ASUS is one of the 80-wire types. Also, I am pretty sure my drives are OK. As I said before, I have tried to use both of them to burn the DVDs, but they both fail. I doubt that they would both crap out at the same time. And I doubt it is a power issue since they burn to regular 4.7 DVDs without any problems whatsoever.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.

the master does belong at the end of the cable

Yes

And I doubt it is a power issue since they burn to regular 4.7 DVDs without any problems whatsoever.

It could still be an issue. 450W is on the low end with the video card you're using. And the write strategy for DL media with your burner might require more power.

I would agree that it's unlikely your burners would die at the same time.

Well, other than a mild suspicion that you might have a power supply issue, you might as well try this method to see if it works

What blank media are you using? Specify a) brand name b)type (-R, +R, -RW, +RW, RAM, DL, etc.) c)media code, d) capacity/size, e) batch codes/serial codes (often found printed on the inner plastic hub of the blank disc), and f)country (factory information would be great as well, if possible) where the media was made (look on the physical packaging; do not rely on programs to accurately give you this information).

If you don't know how to obtain media codes, you may find the following programs useful:

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com and http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

I know you said Verbatim +R DL, but I'd be interested in what those programs say.

I was planning to get a new power supply before long, so I guess the idea has to be put on the fast track now. I didn't realize that burning the two different types of DVDs would require different amounts of power. It wouldn't just give an error message of some sort from the drives maybe, instead of freezing up if that were the case? Are there any other options you can think of for me to try?

? Are there any other options you can think of for me to try?

It's possible that the newer firmware for some reason messed up burning with Verbatim +R DL media. You could try reverting back to an old version.

The freezing would make me suspect either a bad busmaster driver or a power issue. I suppose overheating might also be a culprit (make sure your case has plenty of ventilation without wires hanging in front of fans, etc).

I'm pretty curious if Clonecd works (I use Clonecd with Verbatim +R DL media. I don't use Clonedvd with Verbatim +R DL media).

Yeah, sorry, at this point I'm out of ideas. I tried my best to help. Your filters look fine. Anydvd and Clonedvd appear to be installed correctly.

I didn't realize that burning the two different types of DVDs would require different amounts of power.

It may. Your power supply, I suspect, is on the low end of what you need though, regardless.

Anyway, good luck. I need to get some sleep for now.

Perhaps someone else will respond with some other ideas.

Hey Webslinger,

I used DVD Identifier on one of the blanks and this is what it says:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R-DL:MKM-001-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R DL] - [DVD+R DL]
Manufacturer Name : [Mitsubishi Kagaku Media]
Manufacturer ID : [MKM]
Media Type ID : [001]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [4,173,824 Sectors = 8.55 GB (7.96 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [2.4x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V5.0.1 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would use the DVD Info program as well, but I'd rather not deal with the advert programs it says it will install as well with the free version. Let me know what you think of this info.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R-DL:MKM-001-000]

That's the same blank media I use with Clonecd. Yours was made in Singapore, right (not India)?
If it's made in Singapore, it's the same stuff that I use and recommend.

You could try other +R DL media, but really the Verbatim +R DL media is the stuff to use.

Thanks for all your help with this, Webslinger. It is much appreciated. I am sorry to have kept you up so late. I will venture out to try and find a better power supply tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

I can't promise another power supply will help, but I doubt it would hurt. Look for a good name like Enermax (tell the place you buy it from about your video card and ask them to recommend something with at least 28 amps on a 12 volt rail).

You may also want to try deleting your burners from device manager (along with the associated ide channel) and rebooting.

Yeah, sorry, at this point I'm out of ideas. I would try Clonecd though, just to test.
