I just downloaded the new AnyDVD version 6.1.4.3. I uninstalled the old version and then installed the newer version. I just ran through 4 different DVD's and believe the new version is much slower than the older version.

Since this is a new version, could there have been some debug code left in the source code? This might explain why things are running so slow. It appears to take almost twice as long as the prior version.

Don't know if anyone else has noticed this, so I thought I would ask the question.

What does "run through" mean, and what programs were you using?

What do you mean by "slower"? What's slower? Slower to do what, exactly?

No. No one has reported this.

I meant that I ripped them to my hard drive. I use DVDReMake Pro and Intervideo DVDCopy 5.

What do you mean by slow? It took about 15 minutes to rip, versus about 8 minutes with the older version.

It took about 15 minutes to rip

What program did you use to rip? Using what method? Did you use "rip video disk to harddisk" in Anydvd? Did you use another
program to rip? Did you drag and drop the video_Ts folder with Anydvd running in the background? What program and method did you use to rip?

versus about 8 minutes with the older version.

Using the exact same movie?

No, they were not the same movies. I just know from ripping DVD's in the past that it took between 7 and 9 minutes (rarely 10 minutes) to rip a DVD to a hard drive using the internal AnyDVD ripper.

O.k., the code for Anydvd ripper has changed drastically since the previous update. Previously, Anydvd ripper didn't work properly for newer Sony/Lionsgate movies to provide full disc backup compatibility with DvdShrink. Anydvd ripper does now as of 6.1.4.3. So it is plausible that Anydvd ripper is taking longer to process movies now, properly, than previous versions.

That said, are you sure DMA is enabled for your optical drive/reader?

Yes, DMA is fine. I have several hundred DVD's under my belt and I am not new to this process. I was just surprised to see such a large time difference in the ripping process. I am an old retired Systems Analyst used to questioning when a programs take that much more time to accomplish the same task. I guess the program has to jump through more hoops to accomodate the more complicated DVD's. In my time, I found programmers sometimes forget to remove their debug code and things slow to a crawl. Since there was so much difference in time, I thought this might have happened.

It's possible, but the program was in beta for over a week, and no one reported anything extraordinarly bad. During that time, many of the newer Sony/Lionsgate releases were tested without any issues.

6.1.4.3 2007 05 08
- New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper rewritten from scratch. It is no
longer based on FixVTS code. If you want more control
(stream selection, main movie only selection, ...) we
recommend CloneDVD2 available at http://www.slysoft.com
- New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper can now handle heavily protected discs
- New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper output is now fully compatible with
DVD Shrink and Nero Recode

If it's taking longer to rip than before, it's probably due to ensuring Anydvd ripper's output is compatible with Shrink.

Can you please post an Anydvd status window of the original disc you're testing? Please do step 8

I don't have any performance issues with the ripper. It's a bit slower than it used to be, but, nothing significant and it's doing things QUITE different than it used to.

When "processing" a newly inserted DVD, the new version of ANY-DVD is very much slower that the old version to get to the "Ready" point.

I'm not noticing that at all. Rob Roy R1 took as long to be recognized by Anydvd 6.1.3.6 as it did in Anydvd 6.1.4.3.

The newer Sony/Lionsgate titles are taking longer, but they are taking longer using both versions of Anydvd than normal discs.

Just a quick note... I did a test to compare something.

I compared the time taken to rip Deliver Us From Evil using the ripper in AnyDVD 6.1.4.3 and CloneDVD 2.9.0.4 beta. I intentionally picked a LionsGate release.

Summary for drive Y: (AnyDVD 6.1.4.3)
PLEXTOR DVDRPX-760A 1.06 12/26/0609:00
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 2084960 sectors (4072 MBytes)
Total size: 4169920 sectors (8144 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: DELIVER_US_FROM_EVIL
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Found & removed structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock)!
Found & removed bogus title set!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 11 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

AnyDVD ripper 6.1.4.3: ~16:00. I can't get it down to the second because there's no info at the end of the rip that tells you. This would be a nice addition, IMO. *hint hint*

CloneDVD 2.9.0.4 beta: 25:32. I ripped the entire DVD including all titles, audio, no compression etc so that I could compare it to ripping it with AnyDVD ripper.

I haven't had a chance now to revert to CloneDVD 2.9.0.3 or AnyDVD 6.1.3.6 but there is a huge time diff between AnyDVD ripper and CloneDVD and in the past it should have taken maybe 18-20 min tops to rip this movie with CloneDVD. Maybe later I'll try ripping Casino Royale or another more protected disc and see what the results are.

Just my observations so far.

Edit: I don't consider the speed of the AnyDVD ripper to be that slow. 16:00 for a DVD DL isn't bad though I'd prefer faster if I had the option. ;)

That's weird. I would have expected CloneDVD to be slightly faster than AnyDVD ripper because of "multithreaded async & unbuffered super ultra buffer I/O" (tm?)
Did you have the sheep animation running? Maybe it eats popcorn *and* CPU cycles...

Hell no! ;) I never have the animation enabled. I have a static sheep image just like I always have since way back when.

The system was the same normal operating conditions that I always use it under and it was idle other than the ripping taking place.

I was definitely a bit confused when I saw that huge time difference.

Alright, I did the same test again...

Deliver Us From Evil (LionsGate)

AnyDVD 6.1.3.4: 15:22
CloneDVD 2.9.0.4 beta: 17:21

... and then I did...

Casino Royale Widescreen Edition (Sony)

AnyDVD 6.1.3.4: 12:31
CloneDVD 2.9.0.4 beta: 11:50

I would have expected Casino Royale to take longer but it, obviously, did not.

On another note I can see when watching the rip in CloneDVD that Deliver Us From Evil begins to slow down around half way through the rip. When it starts the estimated rip time is 14 minutes and when it gets about half way through processing (beginning on vts_01_04.vob) it says 4 minutes are left but it takes far longer than 4 minutes. Vts_01_04.vob, vts_01_05.vob, vts_04_01.vob, vts_06_01.vob, vts_07_01.vob and vts_08_01.vob take way longer than one would expect. Is the protection just more complex than it appears?

Edit: I used a stop-watch to time the rip when AnyDVD ripper was used. ;)

Edit 2: (1) So, I don't consider AnyDVD ripper to be slow at all here, (2) I'm surprised that it's faster or so close to CloneDVD depending on the situation, and (3) I can't explain the huge difference in rip times between the first and second test with Deliver Us From Evil when it comes to CloneDVD.

I am having the same problem. I used AnyDVD to "rip video disk to harddisk", and where it usually took around 10 or 15 minutes before, it's now taking over an hour. I did check to see if DMA is enabled, and the setting is "DMA if available". It's really a drag to have it be SO much more cumbersome. I also notice that it's using way more RAM than before--I'm not able to do anything else on my computer while it's running, whereas before I could do what I normally do with no problem. Moreover, I tried to copy "The Queen" this evening, and it kept stopping after 12 minutes. I wish there were a version for people who use CloneDVD and not DVDshrink, because for me, the previous version of AnyDVD was much better and worked flawlessly.

No. You're not. The OP's rip time went from 8 minutes to 15 minutes. That's probably normal

Yours went from 15 to "over an hour". That isn't normal. Something is wrong on your system.

I used AnyDVD to "rip video disk to harddisk"

You shouldn't be if you own Clonedvd.

AnyDVD Ripper works flawless 4 me, no issues @ all. Cant really say that i have noticed any big time differences between v6.1.4.3 and the previous stable release.

I only used the new Ripper to test it, I use CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD for all my backups and it never let me down. I would only use the ripper if I had a " problem movie: that could not be ripped with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2.
