What about AVCHD Authoring and Playback on the PS3 with Nero 7?

According to Nero:

High Definition content on a normal DVD burner?

Even if you don’t have a blue laser burner, you can still edit and play back High Definition content with the latest update of Nero 7 Premium Reloaded. Nero Vision lets you author and edit your High Definition content, transcode it into AVCHD format, burn it without any loss of quality onto a normal DVD, and watch it on Nero ShowTime or a blue laser drive such as a PlayStation® 3. Click here for more information about AVCHD.

BD-AV authoring lets users create and edit Blu-ray Disc content. BD-AV playback allows users to watch authored discs on a PC with Nero ShowTime or on a Blu-ray Disc player. In addition to self-authored discs, BD-AV authoring and playback also supports discs recorded by other devices, such as stand-alone BD recorders.

Enjoy your videos in your Blu-ray player in full HD 1080p format, regardless of what format they were captured in
Grab video from your HDV or DV camcorder and customize the way you like – add menus, playlists, etc., or just simply store in its raw, compressed format

Save time by modifying video already saved to disc – edit clips, rearrange playlists, right on the disc it is currently on.

Take advantage of the newest Blu-ray disc formats – import, export, and backup your movies using the most advanced optical storage available .

Ensure playback of your videos no matter what Blu-ray disc recording format you are using
Enjoy your movies in full Dolby Digital 5.1 audio

Allowing you to back-up your movies on multiple blank DVDs.

Anyone tried this?

I went to their website and that is what it states. It sounds too good to be true. Does anybody have any experiences with this software yet?

It sounds too good to be true.
And it is - kind of. AVCHD is a different format from H.264/AVC found on Blu-ray discs. AFAIK transcoding to AVCHD requires completely new encoding, so it's bound to take a heck of a lot of time. Will give it a go this weekend.

Umm... yeah. Running on a fairly fast C2D PC, with the fastest possible settings. Gave Nero Vision a 4GB 1920x1080 MPEG-2 file and told it to make an AVCHD out of it for burning. According to the progress bar, the task will take 16 hours.

Trying to shorter clip. 210MB / 1min52sec. Encoding time 12 minutes with fastest settings.

Burned the project on a DVD and inserted the disc into PS3. It shows up as a "Data Disc" and you can browse the discs contents.

A playable AVC file is found in BDMV > STREAM > 00000.MTS and PS3 starts playing it fine.

Audio sync gets messed up almost instantly, however. Video codec is recognized as AVC, but DD5.1 is apparently downgraded to DD2.0.

Oddly enough, the source had a DD5.1 (CBR) audio but PS3 reports "Dolby Digital" with a variable bitrate. It's possible Nero Vision did something to the audio.

Didn't have the 2.0 box checked instead of the 5.1 on the Nero 7 did you?

Or maybe you don't have the 5.1 encoder plug-in yet?

But it sounds like a HD to DVD success! If the sound can be fixed.

Could be a potential Clone HD prototype? (Are you listening Slysoft...)

It's not Nero 7, it's Nero Vision; a totally different application. It lists several different audio formats, but I left it at "Automatic".

I wouldn't call it success, to be honest. Way too slow, image quality leaves a lot of room for improvement and AVCHD is not the same thing as H.264/AVC, so it's not compatible with most Blu-ray players.

Apparently you can plug n play an external Hard drive (Fat 32 only I think) into the PS3 and access AVC BD files. These files can also be created with Nero. With Fry's selling 500gb ext HDs for $140 that a realistic option for backing up our BD collection.

Anyone try it?

Yup. PS3 is *incredibly* picky about the files it plays. They have to be encoded exactly to some arbitrarily set parameters, or otherwise it's a no go. Also, the FAT32 limitation is quite bothersome, as it limits filesizes to 2GB.

Any idea why they gave it the AVCHD playability in the new upgrade?

Anyone else tried this and NOT had a sound/sync issue?
