Recommended movies to watch or avoid

I guess I'll participate

Empire of the Sun (one of Steven Spielberg's most underrated films and the only film in which I thought Christian Bale was exceptional; John Malkovich was amazing; the John Williams soundtrack was amazing; everyone acted well; this might be my favourite film)
Alien
Aliens
A Tale of Two Sisters (South Korean horror film)
The Empire Strikes Back
The Sixth Sense
Pan's Labyrinth
Big (this is my favourite Tom Hanks movie)
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Grave of the Fireflies
and pretty much anything Studio Ghibli has released (with a couple of exceptions)
I'm not Scared (Italian)
Aritificial Intelligence
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Legend of Hell House (a bit of a campy horror film)
The Excorist
Kung Fu Hustle (funny movie, but a lot of Stephen Chow stuff is funny)
The Excorcism of Emily Rose
Kairo (Japan . . very twilight zoneish and existential--far better than the American release of "Pulse")
Millions (U.K.)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
From Hell (Johnny Depp acted very well in this film about Jack the Ripper)
Benny and Joon (good movie to watch with your significant other, especially if you like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton)
The Indiana Jones series
Back to the Future
Immortal Beloved
The Professional (Leon)
Battle Royal (Japan--very violent . . . a bit like Lord of the Flies, but a modern Japanese version; Tarantino
was so impressed by this film he used the Japanese actress in Kill Bill; this is not an intellectual film by any stretch)
V for Vendetta
Murder in the First (I think I was on a Gary Oldman kick at one point)
12 Monkeys
Phone (south Korean horror film; it's better than the American versions of The Ring; this one is with a phone call instead of a video--so the concept is a rip-off, but I found this film creepier)

I recently watched Akeelah and the Bee and felt it was a very good film for kids. I think if more children were exposed to that film, it would make the world a better place. I saw it on a flight, and I was very taken with the movie.

I did not really enjoy Little Miss Sunshine (although I did watch it twice). The film is another criticism of the American Dream, and I don't feel anything new on the topic has been expressed since Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby in the 20s. Some funny scenes, I suppose, but I feel the cliche is worn out.

Television series
Firefly

Too many to list, but that's off the top of my head . . .

One movie that I recommend to a lot of people and I didn't notice listed yet was Mystery Alaska. I thought it was pretty darn funny.

I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one to not care for that movie very much.

Make it 4. What an rubbish movie! I wasted good money on this one and no, I didn't even bother to back it up.:(

A knights tale, based on Chaucer's scribbling's was a good laugh. I can recommend that one, especially the extended version. Keep watching after the credits, it's excellent. :D

In no particular order....

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
The Empire Strikes Back
Revenge of the Sith
The Lord of the Rings (all)
Kill Bill (both parts)
Jurrasic Park (any)
Goldfinger or Octopussy
The Usual Suspects

Recent weeks:

The Illusionist *and* The Prestige
The Departed
Casino Royal
Borat!

Well, I can go either way on movies. Sometimes we are in the mood for a soft romance, other time high flying action / drama.

Last night we needed something to grab our funny bone and pull it out so we sat and watch a flick with Robin Williams called " Man Of The Year "

Now we like the wild and hilarious performace he gives in this one. Loved the debate part, had us laughing so hard we dumped popcorn all over the bar and on the floor. He's really tells it like it is when it comes to politics.

Some of the other ones we've watched this week include ;

Crossover (so-so )
Flight Of The Fury (okay if you like Steven Seagal)
Crooked ( same old - same old)
Open Water 2 ( see Open Water 1 first )
Fifty Pills ( it's okay, not as funny as we thought it would be with the title it has)
Keeping Mum - ( The classic Patrick Swayze stuff )

The one set of series we got was with Billy Jack. All four and when they arrived we sat one Snowy Sunday afternoon and watched them all.

Born Losers - Billy Jack - The Trial Of Billy Jack - Billy Jack Goes To Washington

Cars (what a joke- way to much hipe but guess okay for kids)
Nite Sky's (yuk)
Red Door (so-so)
The Raven (good)
Hellboy (okay-for what its worth)
Devil's Den (same old-same old)
Return In red (so-so -- same old)
Sasquatch Mountain (not bad, some good stuff)
Saw III (got to watch the frist 2 first)
Crank (good)
The Covenant ( feel sorry for the boys ? nope)
The Darkroom (Michael Hurst did a good job in directing this one)
Jackass 2 (if that's your cup of tea, see # 1 first tho)
Altered (spin off)

That's just some that stick out right now.

Cheer's

:)

I always dig topics like this, ya never know what you've been missing until someone puts down a title you've never heard of before. Here's a few movies I liked and disliked.

Liked
-----
Baraka - Pictures and music, that's all. Pretty relaxing to watch.
Shaun of the Dead - Horror/Comedy, Comedy/Horror, whichever, it's good.
Seven Samurai - The classic samurai flick
The Fifth Element - Sci-fi with a quirk
The Princess Bride - Probably the only romantic comedy I like.

Disliked
-----
Babel - Too drawn out for my taste, didn't care for how it was cut together either
Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World - It has the feeling of a typical Brooks film, but it really falls flat. Shame too, it started out with a good premise.

And some TV shows for good measure.
-----
Firefly
Prison Break
The Prisoner

A couple more of my favorites are The Devil's Advocate and The Shawshank Redemption. :agree:  :agree:

Since some of you brought up older movies it started my brain cells working in that direction. I have to see The World According to Garp again. I know I liked it a lot when it first came out, I wonder if I'll still find it as funny.

The Life Aquatic (Bill Murry) was one of the worst movies to ever waste my precious bulb life.

The HTPC has our complete list of turkeys on it, but it's not turned on, so I can't access the list on the network. :D

(( O' Brother )) I have to say i liked it a lot and loved the music and the songs in it.

Some recommends

The Departed
What Dreams May Come
Devils Advocate
Man on Fire
Se7en
The Jacket

Someone mentioned the list of 100 classics on the BlockBuster site and it brought to mind that Turner Classic Movies (TCM) just ran their annual "31 Days of Oscar" with various Academy Award nominees and winners (in various categories).

Got to record "Lawrence of Arabia" (Best Picture in 1962; but alas, O'Toole didn't win for Best Actor - went to Peck for "To Kill a Mockingbird"); "Casablanca,"a "Man for All Seasons" and "To Catch a Thief." Also recently got to record M*A*S*H (the movie, not the television show) _ Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland - and the banter - are priceless!

Some of my other "throw back jersey" movie favorites:

NorthbyNorthwest
The Maltese Falcon
African Queen
Citizen Kane
The Mouse that Roared
Dr. Strangelove

Some not as old:

Magnolia
American Beauty
Blade Runner

And, ok, I *liked* Little Miss Sunshine AND the Departed.

Cadaver

Boondock Saints
Casino
Goodfellas
The Departed
Cape Fear
From Dusk till Dawn
Jackie Brown

Another one I just remembered...

For some reason I really really liked "Finding Neverland"

Oh also, "I am Sam" <outstanding acting!

I watched The Illusionist last night and really enjoyed it. I'm going to buy the dvd.
