Can not play DVD in Vista Media Center if AnyDVD is not running

I have installed the trial version of AnyDVD, and have had success in moving movies to the DVD library. But If AnyDVD is not running, and I place a DVD in the drive, I get an error code that says there is a mismatch of the region code. Why will my media center pc no longer just "play" dvds unless the AnyDVD program is loaded?

AnyDVD needs to be running at all times for it to work. In this case, AnyDVD removes the region coding on the DVD so it can play on your region locked computer.
 
If there is not a problem when AnyDVD is running but there is a problem when AnyDVD is not running then I wonder what region you have your DVD drive(s) set to and what region(s) the problematic disc(s) are locked to.
 
I understand that the stripped video_ts may require the software to run, but why can't I just play a dvd in the player without running the anydvd software. not trying to rip it necessarily, just play a real dvd.

The PC played DVDs just fine before I installed the AnyDVD. And it will play them now if I load the AnyDVD software. But if I exit, it will not play due to a region code error. could the AnyDVD software change my region code? or make it "no region code", and therefore not play coded DVDs?

In answer to both questions, "No".

When running, AnyDVD removes region coding along with a host of other things. If you disable or exit AnyDVD then it is doing absolutely nothing.

Could you please do me a favor and do the following?

  1. Ensure AnyDVD is running.
  2. Put the problematic original movie DVD in your burner. Wait for AnyDVD to scan the disc.
  3. Right click the red fox icon on your toolbar.
  4. Select "Create Logfile".
  5. Wait for AnyDVD to create a log file.
  6. A pop-up screen will appear. Take note of the location where AnyDVD created the logfile and the logfile's name. Click "OK".
  7. Go to your "My Documents" folder.
  8. You will see a ZIP file called "AnyDVD_Info_titleofmydisc.zip" (or something similar; see step f).
  9. When replying or posting in the SlySoft forums, look for the icon that looks like
    attach.gif
    (in other words, look for the paperclip after clicking "quote" or when creating a new thread).
  10. If you don't see that paperclip icon, click the "go advanced" button. You should see that icon now. Click the paperclip.
  11. A small pop-up screen should appear (if it doesn't, please ensure your browser is configured to allow pop-ups from the SlySoft forum).
  12. Click the "Browse" button and locate and select the ZIP file you created.
  13. Click "upload".
  14. Close the window. When you submit reply, or submit a new thread, the ZIP file will be attached automatically for us to take a look at.

I don't believe that, sorry. The only way they played is if they were from the same region as the region that your drive is set to (unless you happen to be using region free firmware--and I doubt that).
 
Media Center type PC's have more DRM! Google; <Media Center DRM> You will find many probs. My PC is not a media center type, but sometimes I get a disc that will NOT read unless I exit ANY DVD then reopen after disc read.
I think some discs KNOW if ANY DVD is running. In your case, it may KNOW it is on PC due to extra DRM on media centers. But running ANY DVD intercepts any attempts to thwart play. Go figure! Strange things happen in the world of DRM!
Some of the actions I have to take to backup a disc are just plain silly and INSANE! I wont even attempt to post them! I'd get laughed off! ;- )
 
I have ran across the very symptom the JRude describes several times in pre-built PC's running Vista & Media Center.
