You can make a backup to remove region coding using Anydvd. However, your Sony BDP-S300 must be able to convert NTSC to PAL if you're in region 2.

Merely putting a retail dvd in your drive will not physically remove retail coding on the original disc. Anydvd will make the original disc appear region free on your computer only.

Casino Royale

Thanks for the clarification. Yes I own the original Region 1 disc and I can confirm that the Sony BDP-S300 is:
- able to convert NTSC to PAL; and
- read DVD+R DL discs

I have made a backup disc by ripping to the HDD (7.36 gb) and copying back to a DVD+R DL disc. The BDP-S300 now says Can't read disc?

Success

Much gratitude. Slight overkill in terms of cost to convert 3 x Region 1 'bargain' movies I bought in the States that used to play with ease on my old Samsung! The feeling is nontheless one of elation - thanks!
